Treatment for prolapse vary according the the type of prolapse suffered:

I) Pelvic Organ Prolapse Treatments

Pelvic organ prolapse covers various forms of prolapse, including bladder prolapse (or cystocele), uterine prolapse, vaginal vault prolapse, rectocele, enterocele. The key forms of treatment for pelvic organ prolapse are:

- lifestyle changes – treating potential factors that may cause or contribute toward the prolapse, such as constipation, chronic cough and being overweight
- pelvic floor exercises, or kegel exercises
- vaginal pessaries
- biofeedback therapy – use of devices to help you monitor your pelvic floor; assists you in targeting the right muscles to re-train
- pelvic organ prolapse surgery

II) Rectal Prolapse Treatments

Rectal prolapse is the slipping of the rectum from its normal position through the sphincter muscles and out of the opening of the anus. Treatments include:

- children – typically self-healing
- physically pushing the protrusion back by hand
- kegel exercises – to strenthen the pelvic area muscles
- avoidance of constipation – use of stool softeners, drinking more water, eating more fruit and vegetables
- rectal prolapse surgery

III) Mitral Valve Prolapse Treatments

Mitral valve prolapse is a form of heart disease, whereby a thickened mitral valve leaflet is displaced into the heart’s left atrium. Treatments include:

- no treatment required if there are no complications
- medication – beta blockers, digoxin, diuretics, anticoagulants, vasodilators, flecaninide and procainamide (read more here)
